Science Programs

The Physical Biosciences Division (PBD) is an interdisciplinary division bringing the full range of the physical sciences to bear on important problems in biology. Together, PBD scientists and engineers are building on the advances in the physical sciences and modern biology and exploring the growing synergy that is occurring in the two fields. Major sponsors of the Division’s research are the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Biological and Environmental Research (OBER) and Office of Basic Energy Research (BES), and the National Institutes of Health.
World-class protein crystallography facilities

With the use of innovative facilities and resources, PBD researchers and their colleagues are examining, characterizing, and mimicking biological molecules and molecular functions. The goal is to create unique biological structures that can then be used to solve some of the 21st century’s most difficult fundamental research problems.
