Physical Biosciences Division
Environment, health & safety in PBD
Members of the Physical Biosciences Division should be familiar with the hazards presented by their work; the protections necessary to safeguard themselves, their coworkers and their environment; and the health and safety resources available to them. The Integrated Safety Management Plan (ISM) contains policies and procedures on safe practices, and has been established to assist in ensuring that the Division's EH&S objectives are met. For information on safety training, including web courses, videos and class schedules, see the EH&S training web site.

Special Message from Jeff Pelton
Division Safety Coordinator

I wanted to take a moment to re-introduce myself to you as the Physical Biosciences Division Safety Coordinator (Jeff Pelton, 110 Calvin lab, 486-4355, jgpelton@lbl.gov). Together with Marie Alberti, the PBD safety administrator, and Vangie Peterson, the PBD facilities manager, I oversee safety issues within the Division and act as a point of contact with the EH&S Division of LBNL.

For those of you in LBNL space on the hill, and in both Donner and Calvin labs, LBNL policies regarding EH&S training and safety apply. On the other hand, for those of you in campus space, the UC Berkeley campus office of EH&S handles many of the training and safety issues for your group. LBNL also offers safety classes to campus staff free of charge. As always, if you have safety concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

LBNL offers many safety classes free of charge to campus staff. The LBNL Job Hazards Questionnaire (JHQ) can help with deciding which classes may be appropriate. For groups in LBNL space, the safety courses are required. For campus groups, PIs determine which LBNL classes, in addition to those offered by UC Berkeley, that their group members should take. The schedule of classes can be found on the LBNL training site.

For more information, you may also wish to visit the LBL EH&S website and the UC Berkeley EH&S website.

Sincerely,

Jeff Pelton
